“A mind is like a
parachute. It doesn't work if it is not open.” - Frank Zappa
Open
mindedness is when we receive new ideas, beliefs, values and perspectives with
an open mind. Good suggestions are always welcomed. Our mind has always a space
for new knowledge and ideas. Over the last few years, I observed that open
mindedness creates opportunities to accept innovations and re think
assumptions.
I know that
I'm an open -minded person, but like most of the people, I do have some strong
views about specific topics and find it hard to get away from those opinions, no
matter how others might try to influence me. I believe we should stay true to
what we believe in, but always be ready to accept new beliefs. Sometimes being
open-minded can be really difficult. We are brought up with particular beliefs
and values.
We tend to be with people who share the same values and beliefs
throughout our lives. It is always difficult to face new ideas and beliefs and
therefore we challenge our open mindedness time to time.
I always
teach student to never stop learning and adapting. I always tell them that “Do
not limit yourself. There is so much to be gained. So, keep door to your mind
open and let the new ideas come in.” We
should teach students to take criticism with an open mind and I’m working on it
now a days.
The world will always be changing. I studied chalk talk and lecture
methods and now I’m teaching with projects, assignments, AVs, analysis-synthesis,
inductive-deductive and many more innovative methods. Had I use the traditional method, my students
wouldn’t have loved me for teaching interactively. They love me because I
always try to teach the method which is easy and interesting for them and this
is all because I keep myself ready to adapt new teaching methodology, ideas and
techniques at any point of time.
I’ve
uncovered so many innovative things when I started looking the world around me
with an open mind J
